  3. How can I add a new album to my gallery?

    1. First, go to the album in which you want the album to appear.
    2. Then show the Sidebar, and choose "Add Album" from the Sidebar menu.
    3. Fill in the name and title of the album, and optionally the other information on the form.
    4. Click "Create."
    5. You will see "Album created successfully." At that point, you can optionally change the default settings, or click "Back to Album" at the left.

  4. How can I embed my photos in posts at photography forums?

    1. Log in to your gallery and browse to the page containing the full-sized photo.
    2. Right-click the photo, and choose "Properties" from the menu.
    3. Use your mouse to highlight the URL, and then copy it by doing a control-C or using your browser's "Edit" menu. One easy way to highlight the URL is to triple-click it.
    4. Embed this URL in your post. Every forum works a little differently, but in our ShutterFreaks forums, you click the "image" link in the Instant UBB Code area below the text area, and use control-V or your browser's "Edit" menu to paste the URL into the dialog box that pops up.

  7. How do I change which thumbnail is used to represent my gallery?

Browse the the page that shows the thumbnail of the photo.

Select "Make Highlight" from the drop-down list below the thumbnail.

Where you see "Highlight for," choose the name of your gallery, and click "Highlight."

These steps will update the pages generated automatically by the gallery software. However, this will not automatically update this gallery index web page. That page is maintained manually by the gallery manager, and it may take up to a week for your new thumbnail to appear. If it hasn't appeared after a week, please email us at shutterfreaks@shutterfreaks.com.

  8. How do I change which thumbnail is used to represent an album?

By default, the first photo added to an album is used to represent the album. However, this is easy to change.

Browse to the album which contains the photo, and select "Make Highlight" from the drop-down list below the thumbnail.

  9. How can I change the appearance of my gallery?

You can change the theme and choose a color pack, and you can change the logo that appears in the upper-left corner.

    • Browse to your gallery and log in.

    • Open the Sidebar by choosing it from the top-right menu or clicking the icon at top-left.

    • Choose "Edit Album."

    • Click the "Theme" tab.

    • Choose a theme and click "Choose Theme."

    • After this, you can choose various options below, including colors. If you do, scroll down to the bottom and click "Save Theme Settings."

  10. How can I change the graphic/logo for my gallery?

You can use any graphic you want in the upper-left corner of your gallery.

The image should be a reasonable size for the place it will appear (the upper-left corner of your album page). For reference, the default Shutterfreaks logo is 200 pixels wide and 38 pixels tall.

    • Create your logo, save it as a JPG, GIF, or PNG file, and upload it to one of your albums (just like a regular image) or to another web server somewhere. Copy the URL of the image to your clipboard, using the same method you use when you are going to embed an image in a post in the forum.

    • Go to your main (top-level) album.

    • Open the Sidebar by choosing it from the top-right menu or clicking the icon at top-left.

    • Choose "Edit Album."

    • Click the "Theme" tab.

    • Scroll down near the bottom and paste the URL of your image into the area where it says "URL or path to alternate logo image."

If you want to use the same logo in all your albums, check "Use these settings in all subalbums..."

    • Scroll down to the bottom and click "Save Theme Settings."

  11. How can I add captions to my photos?

The easiest time to add a caption to a photo is when you upload it:

    1. Click "Add Items," browse to the image on your hard disk, and then type in the caption.

    Changing captions later

You can also add or change captions and descriptions at any time after a photo has been uploaded.

    1. To edit captions for all photos in an album, go to the album page, show the Sidebar, and choose "Edit Captions."
    2. To edit information for a single photo you can either show the Sidebar and choose "Edit Photo" on the page showing the full-sized photo, or select "Edit Photo" from the drop-down list under the thumbnail for the photo.

  12. How can I add descriptions to my albums?

    1. Browse to the album.

    2. Show the Sidebar, and choose "Edit Album."

    3. Click the "General" tab.

You can edit the Title, Summary, Keywords, and Description.

Beware of editing the "Name" -- changing the name of the album on the server's hard disk will change the URL of all of the images in the album. If you have linked to these images in a forum, you will need to edit your forum post to correct the broken links.

    4. When you're done, scroll down and click "Save."

  13. How can I move photos within an album?

There are two ways to do this:

    • Browse to the album, show the Sidebar, and choose "Rearrange Items." Click an item you want to move, and then click the place where you want it to be. Repeat as you wish.

Then scroll down to the bottom and click "Save."

    • Browse to the album, show the Sidebar, and choose "Reorder Items." Choose the name of the item you want to move, and select where you want it to be.

      Click "Reorder."

  14. How can I move a photo to a different album?

    • Browse to the album the photo is in.
    • Select "Move Photo" from the drop-down list below the thumbnail.
    • In the window that opens, specify which photos you want to move and where you want to place them, and then click "Move."

  15. How can I rename or change the URL of an album?

    1. Browse to the album.

    2. Show the Sidebar, and choose "Edit Album."

    3. Click the "General" tab.

Edit the "Name." Remember, changing the name of the album on the server's hard disk will change the URL of all of the images in the album. If you have linked to these images in a forum, you will need to edit your forum post to correct the broken links.

    4. When you're done, scroll down and click "Save."

Note: We ask that you NOT rename your top-level gallery (the one ending in YourLoginName), because of that change of URL -- if you rename it, your link from our main gallery page would be broken. The "title," however, can be changed at any time, because it doesn't affect the URL.

  16. How can I tell how much disk space I am using?

    Method 1

Each time you add photos, after the upload is complete, you will see a message telling you how much disk space you are using. It will look something like this:

"You are using 4.23 MB of your allotted 100 MB."

    Method 2

    1. If you want to see your disk space usage when you aren't uploading photos, go to your gallery and log in.

    2. Show the Sidebar. If you don't see your disk quota information there, choose "Edit Album."

    3. Click the "Theme" tab.

    4. In the "Blocks to show in the sidebar" area, open the "Choose a block" list and click "User Quota Block."

    5. Click "Add." Do *not* click "Use Global" -- global settings are the default settings for the particular theme you are using.

    6. Scroll down near the bottom. If you want to see the disk quota information in the Sidebar of all your sub-albums, check "Use these settings in all subalbums that use the Shutterfreaks theme."

    7. Now click "Save Theme Settings."
    8. Return to your album. When you open your Sidebar, you will see the disk quota information.

If you need additional space, you can purchase it at our upgrade and renewal page

  17. How can I tell when someone has left a comment in my gallery?

There is a feature that will let you view the latest comments.
    1. Show the Sidebar.
    2. Click "View Latest Comments."

Note: If you're in your top-level gallery, you'll see comment for all of your albums. If you're in a sub-album, you'll see just comments in that sub-album (and its sub-albums).

  18. How can I upload multiple photos at a time?

    1. On your PC, put the photos into a ZIP file.
    2. Show the Sidebar and click "Add Items," and then browse your hard disk to find the ZIP file. The gallery software will upload the ZIP file and extract the photos into your album.

Problems and Solutions

  1. I've forgotten my password.

Browse to your gallery and click "login." Then click "Recover Password," fill out the form, and click "Recover." You will be sent an email telling you how to reset your password.

If gallery doesn't know what your current email address is, this won't work. In that case, contact us at shutterfreaks@shutterfreaks.com, letting us know what you'd like your password to be, and we'll reset it for you.

And... tell Gallery what your email address is, so next time you'll be ready :)

  2. My photos look good when I edit them, but after I upload them to my gallery they look drab.

Probably your image contains an embedded ICC profile other than sRGB. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and other programs can display your image based on that profile. However, most browsers do not, so your image will look different in a browser.

The solution is to convert your image to sRGB mode before saving it for the web.

  3. I posted a photo from my gallery on a forum and it was working fine, but now all I see where the photo should in my post is a red 'X'.

If you can still see the photo in your gallery, but not in the forum, chances are that you renamed the album after you made your post. Renaming an album changes the URL.

To fix the problem, either rename the album to its original name, or edit your post in the forum to show the correct URL.

By the way, it's ok to edit the Title or Description of an album at any time -- this will not change the URL.

  4. I posted a photo from my gallery on a forum, but people say that they can't see the image.

To prevent strangers from hotlinking to your gallery images, we have blacklisted some sites that we could tell were doing this, and we may inadvertently have blacklisted a forum that you frequent. Just email us at shutterfreaks@shutterfreaks.com to let us know the URL of the forum, and we'll remove it from our blacklist.

  5. Clicking the thumbnail on the ShutterFreaks Galleries page doesn't take me to my gallery anymore. Instead, it takes me to another list of galleries. What has happened?

You have probably renamed your top-level gallery (the one with an URL that ends with "YourLoginName"). Renaming a gallery is different from changing the title or description, because it changes the URL. To fix the problem, either rename the gallery to its old name, or email us at shutterfreaks@shutterfreaks.com, and we'll do it for you.

  6. I uploaded a photo, but the thumbnail isn't right, and when I click it, I get an error.

The file name may contain a reserved word, such as "exit." Exit is the only one we know about so far, but there could be others.

To fix it, go to the page that shows the "broken" thumbnail, and in the drop-down list under it, select "Edit Photo." Then, on the "General Tab," at the top, change the "Name" item to remove or replace the word "exit." For example, you could simply change "2382ExitOnly.jpg" to "2382ExiOnly.jpg" by deleting the "t." This will change the file name on the server.
