Title Plates Tutorial

Using the Actions

Select the area for your plate

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool or another method of selecting the position, shape, and size of your plate. In this case, we have used the Elliptical Marquee Tool.

Turning on View/Rulers can help you with the sizing and accurate positioning of your title plate, for instance if you want to center it at the bottom of your image. However, as long as you haven't flattened your image, you can resize and reposition your plate afterward, by running "resize or reposition plate."

Run One of the Title Plate Actions

If you are plating a hi-rez (print-sized) image, run one of the actions with "Hi-Rez" in the name. In this case, we are plating a web-sized image, so we run one of the actions for Web-sized images: "brass_plate."

If you are running one of the "custom_color" actions, choose your Foreground Color first.

If you get an error saying "Warning: no pixels were selected," you are probably attempting to create a small plate using a Hi-Rez action. In that case, use one of the non-Hi-Rez actions instead.

Add the Text to Your Title Plate

The action will stop for you to add your text. First, select the Text Tool in your Toolbox, then adjust its properties at the top of your Photoshop window.

Now click on your title plate and start typing. You can adjust your font properties if necessary.

While you are typing your text, if you temporarily move your mouse cursor away from the text, it will change to the Move Tool. If you then click and drag, you can move your text, to center it on your title plate.

In addition, as long as you haven't flattened your image, you can resize and reposition your text later, by running "resize or reposition text only."

Restart the Action from Where it Stopped

When you are done with your text, click the "Play Selection" arrow to finish the action.

Make Adjustments, if you want

You can resize or move your plate, and you can resize or move the text only, using the "Reposition or Resize" actions.

Here, we are making the plate smaller, "squishing" it vertically, and moving it.

You can also use the "Tweak" actions to adjust the color of your plate.

Notes:

Large images for printing are best plated using the actions with "Hi-Rez" in their names. Web-size images are best plated using the actions without "Hi-Rez" in their names.

The "Tweak" and "Reposition" actions work on both web-sized and print-sized images.
